How to prompt legal AI: 8 instructions that produce better answers
The quality of the answer depends on the quality of the question.
Two lawyers use the same AI tool. One gets generic answers; the other gets drafts that are almost ready. The difference is in how they ask. Clear prompts, with context, produce far better results.
1. Tell the AI who it should be
"Act as a lawyer specialized in consumer law" guides the vocabulary and technical level.
2. Give the full context
Parties, facts in chronological order, dates, amounts and available documents.
3. Define the goal
"Draft a complaint seeking damages for emotional distress" is better than "help me with this case".
4. Specify the format
Sections, bullet points, approximate length and the firm's drafting standard.
5. Ask for sources
"State the legal provisions supporting each request" makes checking easier.
6. Work in stages
First the structure, then each section. Long texts improve when built piece by piece.
7. Ask for the opposing view
"What arguments could the other side use, and how can we rebut them?" strengthens your strategy.
8. Review and refine
Say what to improve: "make the statement of facts more concise", "strengthen the request for urgent relief".
Important reminder
Every answer needs review: check statutes, case law, names and amounts. AI speeds things up; the lawyer answers for the result.
How IntegraLegal solves this
IntegraLegal's AI already works with the case context: parties, recorded facts, court notices and documents are in the system, so you don't have to retype everything in every prompt. It generates filings, summarizes court notices and improves the writing, with export to PDF, e-mail or WhatsApp.
Try the AI on your own cases: free for 7 days.
